Philosophy and Rationale

Why this programme exists, what distinguishes it from academic AI instruction, and the principles governing its design.

The Advanced Research Diploma in Artificial Intelligence (TIER I) was designed in response to a gap that is both urgent and consequential: the absence of a rigorous, practice-centred programme that equips senior practitioners and institutional leaders with the AI competency required to govern, deploy, and evaluate artificial intelligence systems responsibly.

ARDAI is not an academic qualification programme. It does not seek to confer academic credentials or credit hours in the manner of a university degree. It is a professional capacity-building programme of the highest intellectual standard, designed to meet the demands that artificial intelligence now places on institutions, leaders, and practitioners across every sector of public and private life. Its intellectual standard is set by the evidence base, the scholarly literature, and the governance challenges it engages, not by the status of the institution delivering it.

The programme proceeds from three foundational convictions. First, that AI competency is no longer optional for any institutional leader operating at the level this programme targets: senior public and private sector officials, government officials at directorial level and above, institutional leaders and decision-makers whose work shapes the systems, policies, and institutions that affect millions of people. Second, that genuine competency requires engagement with the technical foundations of AI, not merely its policy surface. Third, that AI governance in Africa requires frameworks that emerge from African institutional realities, African legal systems, and African development priorities, not frameworks transplanted from high-income country contexts and applied without adaptation.

Each of the 13 weeks culminates in a laboratory assignment of publication or submission quality. The programme's assessment philosophy holds that knowledge that cannot be demonstrated cannot be hired, commissioned, or trusted with public responsibility. Every graded deliverable in ARDAI is designed to function simultaneously as a learning task and as an evidence artefact for the practitioner's professional portfolio.

Assessment Framework

A rigorous, evidence-based assessment philosophy. Every graded deliverable is simultaneously a learning task and a professional portfolio artefact.

ARDAI employs a multi-component assessment architecture designed to build, test, and certify competency at every stage of the learning journey. Assessment is not a formality at the end of the programme: it is woven into every lesson, every week, and every domain. The framework is built on a single governing principle: knowledge you cannot demonstrate cannot be hired, commissioned, or trusted with public responsibility.

The programme culminates in a Final Examination taken upon completion of all 13 weeks. Component I

Knowledge Checks

Each lesson includes a formative knowledge check designed to test conceptual understanding before progression. Not graded. Expert analysis is revealed upon completion, supporting learning without penalising exploration. The knowledge checks prepare the practitioner for the Final Examination.

Component II

Voice Lectures

Every lesson includes a narrated audio lecture. Practitioners read and listen simultaneously, enabling deeper engagement with complex material and reinforcing comprehension across different learning styles. Voice Lectures are an inclusive design feature, not optional supplementary content.

Component III

Laboratory Work Samples

Each of the 169 lessons includes a laboratory assignment. This is not an exercise: it is a work sample. The practitioner who completes a lab to a publishable standard has a concrete, demonstrable professional deliverable. Submit completed labs to [email protected] with the subject line: ARDAI Lab Week (N) Lesson (N), (Full Name), (Institution). Labs are reviewed by programme mentors and included in the practitioner's portfolio record.

Component IV

Weekly Capstone Submissions

Each of the 13 weeks concludes with a Capstone Submission: a summative, integrative deliverable synthesising the week's learning into a single publication-standard piece of work. The Week 13 Capstone is the programme's final portfolio submission, submitted before the practitioner sits the Final Examination.

Examination and Resit Policy: The Final Examination is sat upon completion of all 13 weeks and all Capstone Submissions. A maximum of two resit attempts are permitted for practitioners who do not achieve a Pass. Practitioners who do not achieve a Pass on their second resit will not be awarded a Lichfield ARDAI Certificate of Professional Competency and will be required to repeat the programme in full. There is no pathway to certification through Below Pass performance.

Programme Bonus, Three-Day CPP in AI Tools

All ARDAI students receive complimentary access to the Certificate of Professional Practice in AI Tools (CPP): a standalone three-day masterclass in applied AI tools for research and professional practice. The CPP is designed for immediate implementation, delivering practical, deployable skills from day one. It is issued separately upon programme completion as a standalone credential.

The CPP ensures that every ARDAI graduate leaves not only with strategic and analytical competency, but with the applied tool fluency to put that competency to work immediately.

The REF Review, Biannual Academic Journal

ARDAI graduates who achieve Distinction are invited to submit their Week 13 capstone research portfolio to The REF Review, the peer-reviewed biannual journal of the Read and Earn Federation for UNESCO. ISSN registration in progress.

Publication in The REF Review transforms the capstone from a programme deliverable into a contribution to the scholarly record, giving ARDAI graduates a peer-reviewed publication credential at the point of programme completion.

African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights (1981), Banjul Charter: Article 17 affirms the right to education. The AU Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa (2020 to 2030) calls for inclusive digital education at scale. Beyond assistive technology, ARDAI's inclusivity commitment extends to its curriculum content.
